Description
Tifway II, a sterile hybrid Bermuda grass, surpasses Tifway 419 in density, making it highly resilient to wear and tear. Its fine texture, rich dark green color, and exceptional performance in hot climates make it ideal for high-traffic residential areas, golf courses, and sports fields. Its superior drought tolerance and disease resistance ensure a durable, low-maintenance lawn in Southern Nevada’s desert environment. Tifway II recovers quickly from wear, breaks dormancy faster, and stays greener longer, though it goes dormant in Las Vegas winters.
This variety requires full sun (8+ hours) and is not shade-tolerant, thriving in Las Vegas’s sunny conditions. Mowing should maintain a height of ½–1 inch with regular fertilization (3–4 lbs. nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. annually) to support its dense growth. In drought, deep watering and aeration enhance its resilience. As a sterile hybrid, it’s installed via sod, ensuring genetic purity through local cultivation near Las Vegas.
Tifway II’s density and rapid recovery make it a premium choice for homeowners with active yards. Its local cultivation ensures adaptability, offering a high-quality, vibrant turf that withstands heavy use while maintaining aesthetic appeal.

Watering & Maintenance
The following schedules outline watering and fertilizing needs for five sod types commonly used in Las Vegas, NV: Trophy Plus (tall fescue blend), TifTuf, Tifway 419, Tifway II, and Tifgreen 328 (all Bermuda grass varieties). These schedules are tailored to the region’s arid climate, with hot summers and mild winters, and consider local water restrictions. They combine specific guidance from sod providers with general lawn care practices for tall fescue and Bermuda grass in desert environments. Always adjust based on weather, soil conditions, and local regulations, and consider a soil test for precise nutrient needs.
- Trophy Plus: Water new sod daily for 2 weeks, then 2–3 times weekly in summer (1–1.5 inches total). Fertilize every 45 days in spring/fall with high-nitrogen fertilizer.
- TifTuf: Water new sod daily for 2 weeks, then 1–2 times weekly in summer (1 inch total). Fertilize every 45–60 days in spring/summer with balanced fertilizer.
- Tifway 419: Water new sod daily for 2 weeks, then 1–2 times weekly in summer (1 inch total). Fertilize every 45–60 days in spring/summer with balanced fertilizer.
- Tifway II: Water new sod daily for 2 weeks, then 1–2 times weekly in summer (1 inch total). Fertilize every 45–60 days in spring/summer with balanced fertilizer.
- Tifgreen 328: Water new sod daily for 2 weeks, then 1–2 times weekly in summer (1 inch total). Fertilize every 45–60 days in spring/summer with balanced fertilizer.
Watering Guidelines
For all sod types, water within 30 minutes of installation and keep moist for the first 2 weeks. In Las Vegas, water early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation, per Southern Nevada Water Authority guidelines. New sod is exempt from watering restrictions for 30 days.
Fertilizing Guidelines
Before laying any sod, apply 16-20-0 or 15-15-15 fertilizer to the soil. Regular fertilization supports growth, with Bermuda grasses needing it during active seasons and tall fescue requiring year-round care for green color.
Local Considerations
Las Vegas’s alkaline soils and water restrictions necessitate efficient irrigation and nutrient management. Consult sodshop.com/vegas for tailored advice.
